Music, sounds, the Stradivarius and the computer: A dialogue between the music-maker and the music-listener
In what might be described as an 'ecological' spirit, here I recycle an ancient form, the dialogue. I find the dialogue form particularly appealing for its potential to encapsulate ideas both as content and form. This dialogue, between the music-maker and music-listener, is intended as an allegory that uses accessible language in a contemporary, conversational style. From an epistemological perspective, the split maker-listener may be viewed as a fabrication that subsumes numerous conflicts at personal, group and societal levels. The text is about creativity, freedom and ownership, about concept, percept and practice within multidisciplinary and multicultural contexts. It can be reconstructed in different ways when the music-maker and the music-listener are personified under a multitude of guises within multiple contexts.
I have added a bibliographic list following the dialogue that includes some examples of the background reading that has helped to shape the thinking underlying the text. In particular, I have been deeply influenced by Gregory Bateson's writings, especially his 'metalogues', a collection of humorous, deceptively light dialogues that do not specify theatrical elements. I feel this lack of obvious affective content in the text allows readers to construe their own views of how the negotiation of discourses may take place, regardless of what I may have imagined or thought to have implied – or not – using a few italicised words
This article examines conceptions, practices and perspectives on learning with ICT of a group of young people engaged in secondary education. The text is based upon a social semiotic analysis – following Kress and van Leeuwen’s grammar – of 19 drawings and 14 interviews, part of a data corpus collected in a broader piece of research that aimed at exploring the possibilities of integrating the idea of Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) into a school setting. The discussion suggests that, in representing their PLEs, which show uses of ICT tools to support learning, including social networking platforms already integrated into their repertoire of learning resources, these young people do not present innovative or uncommon uses of digital artefacts. In fact, the drawings appear to be characterised by an absence of creative activities and other forms of productive engagement with their immediate environment and the world: the young people seem to position themselves, predominantly, as receptors, suggesting that their appropriation of these technologies is strongly mediated by a traditional and hierarchical school culture. In revealing a picture marked by the mere reproduction of relations that are typical of a banking education based upon a pedagogy of transmission, the discussion points to the limited usefulness of the digital natives category, challenging decontextualized, Promethean expectations of ICT’s transformative potential.
From Didachography to AI: Metaphors Teaching is Automated by
Although automation is not a novelty, high hopes are currently pinned on more and more ingenious devices built with Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI has become a key discussion point in the agendas of governments and multinational agencies, with particular interest in educational applications. This article explores parallels between ideas surrounding AI in education and conceptions proposed in the 17th century by Jan Amos Comenius, known as the father of modern education. Drawing upon illustrations from ongoing research that takes metaphor as its core analytical category, the piece assumes that metaphors are not mere stylistic elements, but strategic persuasive devices. Comenius’ dachography, a portmanteau coined in his 1657 Didactica Magna to describe an inclusive educational system, relies heavily on metaphors that suggest remarkable similarities with contemporary EdTech rhetoric, especially on AI-related developments. Whilst exemplifying that ideas and premises entailed in current discourses on EdTech may hark back to centuries-old ideas, the paper argues that, despite taking on varying, contextually situated linguistic expressions, underlying metaphors appear to have endured from Comenius’ time to support the advent of an educational system poised to automate teaching and, thus, dispense with a key part of his scheme: the teacher. In closing, the piece suggests that we may need to acknowledge the contingent nature of teaching and learning, perhaps accepting that key aspects of what makes us human may always resist engineering

New spaces, new tools, new roles: two case studies on the impact of open educational resources
This paper reports on two case-studies on the impact of Open Educational Resources taken from an investigation carried out on OpenLearn, the UK Open University Open Content Initiative funded by the Flora and Hewlett Foundation between April 2006 and April 2008. The project has re-purposed several thousand hours of learning materials selected from the university's course provision into freely available units of study on a pair of twin sites, the LearningSpace (aimed primarily at learners) and the LabSpace (the experimental space aimed primarily at other educators). The case-studies form part of a broader investigation into engagement with communication and discussion tools provided by OpenLearn.
Each of the case-studies revolves around a collaborative mini-project involving OpenLearn staff and a subject-specialist. The mini-projects were set up with the twofold aim of providing a test bed for the use of resources and tools provided on the OpenLearn Web site whilst providing a context at the boundary between 'formal' and 'informal' learning. Each mini-project was structured around a series of videoconferences supported with a study unit on the LabSpace (containing resources as well as further communication tools), the first focusing on the area of ethics and technology for practitioners, and the other focusing on the area of collaborative design at introductory level.
This paper describes the process of organising and supporting the mini-projects as one of co-creating new spaces and roles for stakeholders involved in teaching and learning. The learning situations created in the mini-projects are located as samples from the 'informal learning/formal learning' continuum afforded by OpenLearn, which suggests a number of boundary issues in relation to curriculum and pedagogy for online learning as well as discourses and technologies of 'opennessï¿

Using open educational resources and Web 2.0 tools to support ethical reasoning in information and computer sciences project-based learning
This project investigated the use of Web 2.0 tools and Open Educational Resources (OER) to support students engaged in project-based learning in ICS. Capitalising on existing environments, tools and learning resources, the project explored the potential of these openly and freely accessible resources to facilitate a space where students can be encouraged to identify, engage with and discuss ethical issues that arise in their project work.
The project consisted of a small-scale investigation into students’ views of social networking as a class of tools potentially useful in a project-based course taught entirely at a distance, with a particular focus on the area of ethical reasoning. Ethics is an important part of the course and integral to its assessment, and the work carried out enabled an initial evaluation of the OER in the area of ethics in ICS (Ferreira & Monk, 2009) created with previous support from the HEA Network for ICS
From content to resource, practice and pedagogy: on the OER movement and its ramificationsAbstractIn little over a decade following its initial conception, the phrase “Open Educational Resources”, OER, has achieved the status of epithet of a “movement” that currently counts on lines of followers and advocates including individuals, educational institutions and even businesses across the globe. The acronym OER functions as an umbrella term that accommodates multiple communities engaged in practices of sharing educational resources on the Web and, crucially, contributing to disseminate underlying democratising values aligned with these practices. However, with Information and Communication Technologies constituting an essential contingency that facilitated the emergence of the movement, the area is, indeed, marked by profound contradictions. These tend to remain tacitly unexamined within the scope of pragmatic agendas that privilege questions of a more practical nature and, therefore, promote focus on issues pertaining to the sustainability of the movement and its initiatives, intellectual property and copyrights, and interoperability between formats and platforms. This article suggests the need to combine actions related to implementation, dissemination and development of a wider awareness of the potential of OER and their more recent ramifications with a more careful examination of the practices and thinking produced in the area from the perspective of contemporary thinking by critical commentators. The article discusses the OER movement with basis on a partial history constructed from an examination of its seminal documents and a selection of complementary sources, thus providing a critical introduction to the area as well as a backdrop for the presentation of themes that arise for further problematization. Key words: Open Educational Resources. OER. Open Content. Distance Education. Online Education. </span
